Florae Series
In flowers and plants I see life – the beauty
of birth, living and death – the essence of creation and
renewal. I compose these images not to document, but to
experience a unique connection with nature using the camera as
a tool. There is a rich history of photographing flowers and plants.
One of my first recollections of photography as art is the botanical
imagery of Imogen Cunningham. Seeing an exhibit of her photographs
years ago began my passion for black and white photography. The
Florae series takes the black and white print a step further.
It is produced using a large format 4”x 5” camera
with Polaroid black and white peel-apart film, which produces
a negative. A technique of “solarization”
is applied, giving the painterly effect of a thin black line around
the petals, leaves and stems. The negative is scanned and
the print is produced using the Piezography digital carbon pigment
method on 100% rag fine art paper.

Hawaii Series
In a landscape such as Hawaii where there is an
abundance of color – the sky, sea and vegetation is almost
overwhelming at times. Making elegant black and white images of
pure light and tonality is the challenge. It is an interpretive
process – the art or seeing in light and shadow.
The diverse beauty of the landscape and culture
of Hawaii is what has inspired my interest to photograph there.
Intimacy, peace and an appreciation of the gifts of our environment
are what I want to express as I compose the spaces of the photograph.
I return often to experience this peace and intimacy.
These film-based images are scanned and archivally
printed in the Piezography method – a carbon pigment ink
digital process on 100% rag fine art paper. They are printed
in a variety of sizes – some to image size 30” x 30”
and 30” x 37”.
